In Honour of the Hunger Games Trailer... (Katniss/Gale, Katniss/Peeta, Gen)

Here are three fanfic recommendations that coincide with screencaps from the effing awesome trailer.

"I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute!"
Four Times Katniss Wasn't Reaped (And The One Time She Was) by lit_chick08
He's always been more afraid to hear her name than to hear his own.
Verdict: This is a great canon expansion from Gale's point of view. Great characterisation, and plotted very neatly, Four Times... presents the reaping with as much emotion as the trailer did.

Even When You Win, You Lose by angelan
Peeta muses on his feelings for Katniss before the games begin.
Verdict: A perfect portrayal of everyone's favourite baker's son.

Not Yet A Hurricane by Solaryllis
It's harder than people realize to be the one left behind. Gale's story of Katniss and Peeta's Hunger Games.
Verdict: Solaryllis is a brilliant writer who does a fantastic job of conveying what it would have been like to watch the games - a point of view that we'll most likely be seeing in the movie.

It seems like the odds are in Gary Ross' favour, hey?

Kaleidoscope Heart (Gale/Johanna)

Kaleidoscope Heart by SamSnead.
Two bruised and battered souls figure out how to rebuild.

This fic is a little gem. Kaleidoscope Heart is a raw, touching and just perfect look into Gale and Johanna's lives after the war, and how their lives begin to intertwine. SamSnead does a wonderful job expanding on Johanna Mason and giving her more emotional depth. Also, this author has to be applauded for such an empathetic and canonical portrayal of both of these characters, but Gale in particular.

The interactions between Gale and Johanna start off as a mixture of anger, hurt, confusion and sympathy, which makes for compelling dialogue. SamSnead makes you want to see Gale and Johanna meet again. You instantly feel as though they understand and need each other.

"Hawthone -"
He stops, and turns to face her.
"I -" She looks like she is searching for the right words. "I say the wrong things sometimes…"
It's not an I'm sorry, but somehow it feels like one. He knows it's the closest thing he'll get to one, anyway. So he shakes his head and decides that maybe he's just too tired to fight anymore.
"It's okay. So do I," Gale shrugs.
He sees a ghost of a weary smile pass over her lips. For a second, he thinks that it suits her.

This complementary characterisation continues throughout the rest of the story. In this four-part ficlet, readers watch the natural and right relationship of Johanna and Gale progress in their new world. SamSnead carefully balances heart-wrenching moments with soft, calm scenes between the two lovers. All in all, Kaleidoscope Heart felt to me like a perfect, happy enough ending to Gale's story. Even though I'm a bit of an all rounder when it comes to shipping Gale, SamSnead made me want to jump aboard! This fanfiction is a must read for Johanna/Gale shippers, and for those Gale fans who want a better ending than what's prophesied at the Ask Gale tumblr, hehe.

Primrose Post!

Hey fellow tributes! I hope you're having a fabulous week :) Today I'm bringing you a recommendation for fics centred around everyone's favourite little duck, Prim.

Good Primrose Everdeen fics are hard to find - all of these (pffft, all = three) I found on Archive Of Our Own. I think because we aren't given much of Prim's character - or perhaps because she's young - Prim isn't a character than many people base their writings on. However, I've found some wonderful fanfictions that I loved loved loved reading; they are mostly one-shots that expand on what Suzanne gave us and breathe life into Primrose Everdeen.

(Beware: Mockingjay spoilers lie ahead.)

Title: the mechanics of a dream (your future's a machine)
Author: Electrumqueen
Summary: Prim and Rory live their lives, until the revolution comes calling.
(Recommended by Miss Scarlett 05)
Why? The mechanics of a dream (your future's a machine) is a dark, adult, screwed up fic and it totally sucks you in. Not for the faint hearted. It's a great expansion on Prim from the little girl to someone as brave as her sister. The Rory/Prim pairing works really well in this, and Primrose's characterisation is just ramble-worthy in a twisted and gritty AU world. Electrumqueens' writing is superb.

Title: Choosing Fate
Author: Sour-Idealist
Summary: Prim has always had a sense for when to brace herself.
Why? Choosing Fate is a lovely short piece with a real sense of purpose. The final allusion to the events of Mockingjay is very well done, as is the brave and resolute characterisation of Prim. The descriptive language, especially a great simile in the first scene, is beautifully done in such a simple fanfic; "hears the sweetness slipping around the center of it as the T brushes behind her teeth like a kiss."

Title: so my hopes rise and fall
Author: Not Listed
Summary: Primrose Everdeen is strong in her own way.
Why? This is an interesting third-person perspective that favours Prim. This author's attentiveness to the canonical portrayal of Primrose is excellent, as are their observations on Prim and Katniss. Long, compounded sentences really add to the calm, reflective tone of this fic. I think this fic puts up a very good plight for Prim!

Weekly Fan's Fic Rec: Holidays (Katniss/Peeta)

Title: Holidays
Author: MelissaVampGrrl
Summary: Post-Mockingjay fic in which Katniss goes through a crash course of traditional holidays and finds her way back to Peeta.
Why kabochacha loved this fic: I love the Peeta/Katniss interaction in this fic and it helps to fill in the pre-epilogue hole.  It's fun, it's a little sexy, and the author writes canon characters into a sweet little romance without being campy (... okay, it's a little campy).  Definitely for an adult audience.

You too can submit your favourite fanfic to be feature in the Weekly Fan's Fic Rec by using this form!

November's Author of the Month: koalakoala

As the title of the post suggests, our Author of the Month for November is koalakoala!

Koalakoala has a great way of capturing emotions and personal relationships with words. Her story flows clearly and effortlessly, and her writing style is simple yet not simplistic. The stories she writes have a sort of elegance to them, and they like you thinking about them in the end, Here's an excerpt from yellow brick roads, one of her many excellent Haymitch/Maysilee one-shots:

I don't miss Twelve because I'd rather have my death be…I don't know, epic. It's better than starving.
It's what he said when she asked him why, on the train, and she still doesn't understand it. She'd rather think about surviving than surviving heroically. And she's never known what it feels like to be so hungry that you could actually die. She wonders if that's a good thing.
"Good night," she says finally. Her feet hurt and she's tired, therefore unable to think of anything wittier. And tomorrow they'll both be in the Hunger Games.
"Good luck, Maysilee," he answers.
She enters her room and shuts the door and unzips her dress. Brushes her hair, stains her towels with black, and wipes the polish off her nails. Her reflection looks like she used to, but she isn't quite. She can't think about anything but Haymitch, saying, it's better than starving.
She genuinely thinks she'd rather starve.
