Little Miss Mionie's Recs: How Annie Cresta Went Mad (Annie/Finnick)

Hi guys! I had a few days break, but now I'm back! Huzzah! And what's more, I'm recc'ing to you a great fic I found while lurking around LJ today.

There’s something wrong about someone being so shiny. Something unrealistic. So easily she can see the pain that he’s trying to hide. It drives her to insanity, knowing she can see these things and no one else can.

PS. Spoilers for Mockingjay!

How Annie Cresta Went Mad is a wonderful one-shot split into six parts. It gives snapshots of Annie’s view of the Games in light of she and Finnick’s relationships. Each segment focuses on a different character, and is written in third-person. I adore the idea that the author brings across that Annie’s madness is due to being able to see the truth – quite a contrast to the delusional canon Annie we come to know.

Insomniaticrose uses some lovely descriptive and emotive language in phrases that really reach out to you and capture the melancholy, heart-wreching tone of this piece. A brilliant example of this is in “003. Seaglass”, which is one of the longer segments of this fic.

“The beautiful mess is now shattered into tiny pieces that splay across the ground. She crumples to the floor.”

There’s also some awesome allusions to history that made me squee inside as I read this one-shot – I’m not the only one who understands the ancient allegory of things like Plutarch, Castor and Pollox and Panem! Yay! I think references like this really add to the intellectual integrity and creativity of stories. This notion is seen in the second segment where Annie reflects on the Games.

“They are fed, they are entertained. Why dare question the president? Sometimes Annie shuts her eyes, wishing she were blind too.

Bread and circuses, she thinks. There’s a reason the Roman Empire fell.”

If you’re a Annie/Finnick shipper, an Annie fangirl, or someone looking for a quick fanfic-fix with a dash of angst thrown in, How Annie Cresta Went Mad is a must-read.
