This week's fan's fic rec is being shared by the lovely iwriteincoffeeshops!
Title: Till The Sweet Apple Grows
Author: fortesfortunaiuvat
Summary: 15 year old Bonnie MacFarlane wins the 49th Hunger Games and is District 10's first victor. A one-shot about how she wins and what follows.
Why do you love this fic? "We hear a lot about District 12, 4, and the Career districts, but not much about District 10. The author makes the district come to life in her various stories, and this one is my favorite because of the characters. It's really great."

A Tri-Rec Post (Undiscovered Gems)
Why, hello there, everyone. This post we've got three fabulous oneshots that deserve a bit more recognition. *notes eagerness on audience's faces* Ah well, here you are, this week's recs~!
~ ~
Title: A boy A girl A memory
Author: librarylemming
Summary: The story of the boy from district 10 in the 74th hunger games - the boy with the limp. The life you didn't see, and about the girl who was there watching him from the other side of the television screen.
Quote: "Flickering images. Distorted sound. Nothing seemed real to her anymore. With a stony expression, she watched as they were paraded in their costumes, she watched as they were interviewed, she watched as they lived what was left of their lives on a TV screen. She couldn't think, or sleep, and she barely spoke. Her eyes were forever glued to that screen, as if it held secret to life itself."
Recommendation: Before reading this fic, I'd never given a lot of thought to the District Ten boy. But this story is so beautiful it can make you care about the most minor of characters. Wonderful character development in a small piece, and a tragic, tear-inducing story all the way around. It reminds you that everyone had someone rooting for them to come home. Brought to you by librarylemming in a unique and well-chosen format, too. Highly recommended - check it out for yourself, and review!

Title: 23 Flies
Author: The Withering Panda
Summary: Innocent Johanna Mason could never hurt a fly. But maybe 23... Written for The Rebels forum Holiday Secret Fic Exchange.
Quote: "The girl from One, she decided, would die slowly. And her district partner would watch, then be mutilated (preferably). Gerard Sullivan from Two, obviously the biggest threat, would die last, as the king piece is always defeated last in chess. His district partner, Sabrina, would be slaughtered as quickly as possible in order to shut her up. Districts Three, Five, Six, Eight, Nine, Ten, and Eleven would be killed... normally. Without special treatment. They made no impression on her. Nick, the boy from Seven, would be avoided as long as possible, and killed quickly if it came to that. The tributes from Four, she planned to drown. And the pair from Twelve would be trapped in an inconvenient avalanche or landslide."
Recommendation: The Withering Panda has a talent for packing a lot of power into oneshots that flow wonderfully and leave you wanting more but satisfied with the ending. This isn't just a normal "Johanna's Games" fic that exposes her plan to appear a weakling - instead it brings out a whole different side to her character, one that's cruel and calculating and slightly scares the reader. Subtle but understandable references give insight into what's behind the Hunger Games. Go on, read and review - you won't be disappointed.

Title: Wrong Turn
Author: Toxophilite
Summary: "I knew I should have taken a left." Getting lost during an uprising can never turn out well. Written for the Caesar's Palace Prompts: Member Challenges, The Vivid Challenge.
Quote: "A bomb hits a building to my left, sending me flying back. I slam into a wall and struggle for air after the force of the impact combined with the smoke. I refuse to die today. I have to keep moving.
Squinting my eyes, I make my way through the smoke filled streets.
Right, left, right, right, left."
Recommendation: This fic features a simple concept but executes it with more sophistication, zooming in on events scarcely mentioned in Mockingjay - especially, what it was like to be in a rebelling district for a citizen. The rather gruesome setting adds a layer to the war rarely seen in most fics which prefer to focus on large plot events instead of the regular people of Panem. The bloodshed isn't just in the background, either, but is quite well-written and painful to read (in the way intended). Experience it yourself - go read and give feedback.

February's Author of the Month: be-nice-to-nerds
Hey, guys! Sorry for the lateness of this post... but I do have a great author to recommend to you all, and that is the marvelous be-nice-to-nerds!
Looking over BNTN's work, the first thing that strikes me is how detailed her version of Panem is. This author knows exactly who each tribute was in the 74th Hunger Games, how many victors District Three has had and exactly how they won their Games. These details give BNTN's stories a lot of depth. Also, she is amazing at delving into characters' emotions in a subtle but touching way. To show you what I mean, here's an excerpt from Beetee and the Bomb, about the famous D3 victor after the end of Mockingjay:
They say that there are only seven Victors left. Beetee refuses to believe it. Doesn't want to. Wiress is dead, he can accept that. He saw her die. But Johan? Marchessa? The other two District Three Victors are far too smart to not find an out.
They have to be.
…
When no one else knows what you've been through, the Victors form your family.
Wiress and he were incredibly close, in a purely platonic way. It was just the two of them for a decade before Marchessa won her Games, and something like that forms a lasting bond. She was bursting with ideas but wasn't able to express them properly. They all learned how to fill in the gaps she couldn't put to words, but Beetee better than all of them simply because he has (had) known her the longest.
Johan (is? Was? He doesn't know) the youngest of the four. He was the only one to bring a non-Victor into their little circle of houses in District Three's Victors Village. Mac fits right in with the rest of them, and while Beetee can't really judge, the two females say they can easily see what Johan sees in him.
Not many outside of District Three know that Johan's gay. He doesn't mind telling people but doesn't bring it up unless they ask. His reasoning is that specifically stating his sexuality leaves more room for prejudice than if he just treats it as normal. None of the others go around telling people that they're straight, do they?
Marchessa is (because really, she of all people would have found a way to stay alive) small, cynical, and chillingly intelligent. She's arrogant about her abilities to the point of alienating all those she believes beneath her because of their alleged idiocy, but the arrogance is often not without reason. Frustration with her situation grew fast on her; she is closed off and slightly distant with the others, but she is still one of them.
Beetee knows she was spying for the Capitol. He also knows it's nothing personal – Marchessa's too jaded and bitter to believe in the ideology like the other three did, and had been through too much to let morals get in the way of self preservation.
Seeing what Coin's been doing, he's beginning to think maybe her cynicism was right. The Capitol and District Thirteen are really only two sides of the same coin.

A Portrait Of The Mechanic As A Young Girl
A Portrait Of The Mechanic As A Young Girl is one of the most refreshing and interesting fics I've ever come across in the Hunger Games fandom. The author, shellebelle, goes to great lengths to flesh out Wiress as a character, as well as the world and era that she lived in. The minute details are the best: Wiress' acceptance of her dad's mental instability, the way she reflects on the female neighbours saying goodbye to her, her obvious love for school, her awe at everything in the train being so clean. These little things help to manifest shellebelle's deep characterisation of our favourite mechanic. The reader finds themselves, at the beginning of the fic, with Wiress as she stands for the Reaping, and immediately we get a clear image of her: strong, reflective and intelligent.
How did I get here?
As I turn, facing all of my peers and teachers at the reaping, I can't help but feel disbelief. Sure, I have been preparing myself for this eventuality, but I still can't believe I'm up here. That I'll go
there.
To the Hunger Games.
I can feel myself starting to panic, but I close my eyes and recite the things that I know about myself in my head: My name is Wiress Mihos. I am fourteen years old and I am in the Mechanical Engineering Program in the District 3 school. My father is insane. My mother has disappeared. I'm a genius and a Mechanic and an Inventor. And now, I'm the newest Tribute for District 3.
Somehow, a blunt retelling of the facts is most helpful in calming myself down...
When I was younger, I loved school. I'm sure a lot of kids would say that, but for me, school was a haven. It meant everything to me. Everything.
This fic is encapsulating on so many levels - a glimpse into the characters' we know and love (and hate!) pasts is one brilliant feature. Wiress' relationship with Beetee, her mentor and District Three's Victor, is awesome to read.
This fic has many heart wrenching moments, as the books do, where the protagonist feels a sense of hopelessness; as a reader, you really do connect with Wiress. There's no shortage of Capitol-inspired horror within these Games - and the depths of the sadistic mindset in Panem is shown in full glory before the Games even start. There's a horrible (yet brilliant) moment in Chapter Five where Wiress realises the Avox serving them on the train is actually her mother. It's brutal - but gives an indication as to what lies in store for poor Wiress.
And then the Avox woman comes back to bring coffee, and I look up at her without thinking to thank her (even though I don't have to).
...it would be a cliché, and most untrue, to say that I look up into my own eyes. Her eyes are brown, and mine are green. But there is my mouth. My cheekbones. There is my hair, my thick, black, stringy hair, though hers is shot through with grey. Her hair seems the only thing that is aged, as her face is largely unlined, but for a few lines of sadness at the mouth, of weariness at the eyes. And I can see in her expression that she is as dismayed as I am that I'm here.
“I...” But no. I can't talk to her. I can't talk to her and she can't give me any answers because they cut out her tongue and now I know, I know where she is but it gives me no comfort, and no answers.
It's all too much. I burst into tears (all the acknowledgment I can give her) and run from the room, locking myself in my room and weeping. But thinking, always thinking, because I can't stop, and pacing. Back and forth, back and forth, like a caged mutt.
There's no way they didn't know she was my mother. As soon as I showed up, as soon as they took my picture and signed me in, they had to know. I always knew I resembled her, because everyone who'd known her said so. But I had not realized just how much that was true.
How could they not know? What do they want from me? My thoughts chase themselves around in a circle until finally, I sit down on the bed, with my arms wrapped around my legs. There's nothing I can do. There's nothing I can do but continue with my training, continue doing what I must.
I have no other choice. There's nothing at all I can do for her. And the thought of that is awful.
To conclude, A Portrait Of The Mechanix As A Young Girl is a wonderfully unique Hunger Games fic. It explores a minor character's personality and past with depth and ease - and it shows that every Hunger Games is a horror story in itself. I love how differently this storyworld is portrayed. It's a must read!

Sponsors/Game Over (OC)
Allo, allo folks! I'm Polkapop and I'll be rec'ing the more complete side of THG fics. Which means I'll be spending countless hours reading through extensive stories for your enjoyment! And... maybe mine as well.
So let's get started, shall we? My first two fic rec's are by the wonderful gethsemane342. I've chosen this set because of my need to get the full picture of Panem. So today I bring you:
Title: Sponsors
Author: gethsemane342
Summary: So, why would someone actually sponsor a tribute? Twenty-four sponsors and their reason for picking their tribute
&
Title: Game Over
Author: gethsemane342
Summary: We know why someone would sponsor a tribute. But how do they feel when their tribute dies or wins the Hunger Games? Twenty-four oneshots for twenty-four tributes, sequel to Sponsors.
Recommendation: Okay, I know what you might be thinking - how on earth does a capture of one-shots make a complete story? Well, in my pursuit of completion I'm not only searching for stories that are technically complete, according to the authors, but also stories that make the idea of Panem complete. Both "Sponsors" and "Game Over" are outstanding ideas to add to the fanfic of THG. They're well written and are strong in their character development of the sponsors themselves (each one-shot features a different sponsor). In these short stories the reader is given a character who they know nothing about and in less than (typically) 500 words, the reader knows a backstory, scenario and reasoning for why they chose their tributehow they felt post-tribute death. That to me is excellent construction. Further, each story hints at the bigger picture of Capitol residents - they tell of rebellion, pity, selfish pursuit and realization. The author gives a side of humanity to characters that readers often only see as one-dimensional.
Mostly, I just liked the idea of breaking the mold set out by canon. These stories are snapshots of the characters who are the audience - and that viewpoint is strangely intriguing.

Little Miss Mionie's Recs: Humorous Fanfiction?
Little Miss Mionie's Recs:
Humorous Fanfiction?
I thought it would be a good idea to start this post with why I decided to do this post.
Like many other fans, my love for this fandom knows no bounds.
So, after listening to "Hunger Games! I Wanna Go" by WinterSpringPro for the billionth time on my ipod, I decided to do a post listing some awesome Hunger Games Parodies. I searched a while, through many sites...and, well, I could only find a couple that were worth mentioning. I'll be honest, I was looking for a satirical kinda parody, where someone comments on the political and social stuff in the books, but I guess we'll have to wait for the movie parodies to do that.
I know everyone's humour is different, so if there's a funny fic I haven't recc'd (and since I've only done two, I'm sure there's squillions) and you're like o_O LMM WHY HAVENTCHOORECCEDZIS?, leave a comment and I'll add it here :)
(The rest of this post is under the cut because once I added the fanfics suggested by you, this post got a little long!)
